The Hertfordshire walks listed below range from easy circular walks to more demanding longer routes. All walks are free to download and print and all routes have GPS files. The walks cover most of the attractive countryside of the County including the Ashridge Estate near Tring and the areas that lie within the boundaries of the Chilterns AONB. Routes pass many historic buildings including churches, country houses and wartime establishments. Many of the walks include sections of long distance footpaths including the Hertfordshire Way, the Icknield Way and the Harcamlow Way. For those who like walking along waterways, there are routes along the Grand Union Canal and beside the many rivers that lie within the County boundaries.

Hertfordshire Guide

Despite its proximity to London, Hertfordshire offers a wide range of walking opportunities through pleasant countryside and attractive villages. Hemel Hempstead, Stevenage, Watford and St Albans are the main towns with walks to suit all abilities within easy reach. The highest land in the county lies to the north-west at Pavis Wood near Tring (244 metres above sea level). Part of the county lies within the Chilterns National Landscape (formerly AONB) and is characterised by rolling hills offering scenic walks. Long distance footpaths in the county include the Ridgeway, Icknield Way, Harcamlow Way, Hertfordshire Way and the Grand Union Canal Walk.
