Jersey Walking Guide

Jersey is the most southerly part of the British Isles and situated nearer to France than England. Cared for by the States of Jersey, the Island's Government, Jersey was the first tourism destination in the world to gain the Green Globe destination status for its environmental conservation. A natural year-round holiday choice, it is ideal for short or longer stays perhaps using the island as a jumping off point for visits to the other Channel Islands and France.

Jersey is naturally beautiful. Clear waters and beaches surround some 45 miles of coastline - the island's greatest natural treasure. The varied geography of the island is ideal for walkers with something to suit all ages and abilities. In the south gentle seafront promenades provide easy walking. Inland wooded valleys and quiet country lanes provide pleasant rural routes whilst on the north coast rugged cliffs rising almost 400 feet make for more challenging excursions.

Measuring just 9 miles by 5, Jersey benefits from a network of quiet country lanes. With walkers in mind a network of over 40 miles of "Green Lanes" has been developed. Clearly signposted the aim is give precedence over the motor car with a speed limit of just 15 mph allowing walkers the opportunity to enjoy the countryside.

Whatever the season Jersey is an island where you can escape or relax with so much to discover and enjoy. It is a natural all year round destination.

Getting there - The cost of travel of travel to Jeresy is generally inexpensive. There are a large number of scheduled and charter air services from airports throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. In addition Jersey is also served by modern car-ferries operating from the south coast of England. Travellers can choose between fast car-carrying catamarans or the more leisurely conventional car ferry.

Car Hire - car hire in Jersey is easily arranged and very good value. Petrol costs less than on the mainland. Visitors must hold and bring with them a valid driving licence. The maximum speed limit is 40 mph (64 kph). In addition lower speed limits apply in built up areas with a 15 mph limit on "Green Lanes".

Passports - No passports are needed for visitors travelling from the British Isles and the Republic of Ireland. Passports are required for day trips to France.

Currency - Sterling is accepted freely on the Island as are all major credit and debit cards.

Customs Allowances - As jersey is not part of the EU you can still purchase your duty free items en-route to the Island.

Banks - Are normally open the same hours as the UK. Building Societies facilities are restricted and you should check prior to travelling with your Society.
