Book Review - Pilgrim Routes of the British Isles

Book cover imagePublished by Crowood Press this recently released hardback book covers seven pilgrim trails in the British Isles. Many of these date back several centuries and once held significant religious relevance in their time. Today the routes still see some pilgrims but they share the paths with walkers following the route for purely leisure purposes.

The author, Emma J. Wells, has done her research and gathered together some interesting facts and history from the trails. Each of the routes is dealt with in a separate chapter supported by maps, history of the path with an overview of the route. Illustrated throughout, the book provides perfect reading prior to undertaking any of these trails. It is worth noting that the book does not contain detailed route instructions as these are covered by other books and Ordnance Survey maps in most cases.

The chapters cover the following routes:

1. St Andrew's Way from Edinburgh to St Andrews
2. St Cuthbert's Way from Melrose to Holy Island
3. North Wales Pilgrim's Way from Holywell to Bardsey Island
4. Our Ladies of Caversham Pilgrimage Walk from Windsor to Caversham
5. The Pilgrim's Way from Winchester to Canterbury
6. The Saint's Way from Padstow to Fowey
7. The Pilgrim's Trail from Winchester to Portsmouth (note this trail continues through Normandy).
