The quiet chalk downs of Wiltshire are the focus for this walk from Longbridge Deverill which includes some climbs although the effort is well rewarded with magnificent views across the Wylye Valley. In ancient times, this area was full of life and the tumuli, barrows and former villages marked on Ordnance Survey maps are evidence of previous inhabitants.
The start is the centre of Lonbridge Deverill (grid ref. ST868408) where parking is limited. However, there is a small layby by the telephone box opposite the George Inn which provides a convenient starting point. After parking cross, the A350 with care and take the road signed to Maiden Bradley which runs down the right side of the George Inn. Follow this lane for about a kilometre to just before Wing Farm (grid ref. ST858406). Turn left down the bridleway to a cross track after 400 metres. Turn right and continue to Rye Hill Farm. Continue straight ahead to the end of a long thin field (grid ref. ST841399).
Turn left into the next field and after 100 metres or so to a footpath sign. Turn right and follow the path along the northern of Bidcombe Wood across fields to reach a Millennium Stone and the Mid Wilts Way (grid ref. ST827398). Turn south through a gate in the corner of the field and follow the clear track up through Bidcombe Wood to reach the western end of Woodcombe Bottom (grid ref. ST827391). Continue on the track which swings south-east following a fence on your left. Just after passing a beacon, the track divides (grid ref. ST941381). Veer left here and continue to the trig point on Cold Kitchen Hill. Continue northeast past the long barrow on your left to reach a junction of tracks by a farm building (grid ref. ST849385).
Continue straight ahead in a north-easterly direction heading downhill with the field boundary to your immediate right. After 600 metres, you reach a wider track (grid ref. ST853390) with a small reservoir away to your left. Turn right along the broad track and continue downhill across the flank of Brims Down to Woodcombe Farm. Continue past the farm (on your left) and walk along the lane to the B3095 by a thatched cottage at Brixton Deverill (grid ref. ST862389).
Turn right along the road. Cross the River Wylye and turn left down the lane signed as a 'no through road'. Follow the lane as it swings sharply left by another thatched cottage and walk to the end of the lane. Just past the last thatched cottage on the left ignore the track going right and follow the signed footpath half right across the field. Continue across a second field following the same direction. In the next field, the path heads north to join a track at grid ref. ST869392. Follow this clear track down past Field Barn Farm.
Just past the farm, turn left down a clear track. After 500 metres take the footpath on the right at grid ref. ST870401. This leads along the left-hand edge of a field before going straight across a larger field to exit on the A350 (grid ref. ST8714040). Turn left along this main road taking care for 400 metres until you reach the pavement after the junction with the B3095 on the left. The start of the walk is a short distance ahead.
